From the retrieval of just a few fragmented sequences of mitochondrial DNA, it is now feasible to sequence entire nuclear genomes from the past. Dr. Eske Willerslev, Director of the Centre for Excellence in GeoGenetics and the National CryoBank and Sequencing Facility at the University of Copenhagen, will present some of the recent technical breakthroughs and challenges in his groups work with ancient genomics and environmental DNA. The presentation will showcase their recent sequencing of the first ancient human genome (a 4000 year old Paleo-Eskimo), the genome of an historical Aboriginal Australian, and on-going work with horse genomics using the 3rd generation Helicos platform. Finally, some environmental DNA data will be presented which includes evidence of the earliest humans in North America.

GTC's 3rd Next-Generation Sequencing Conference on June 19-21, 2013 in San Francisco, CA will provide a forum for industry, academic and government leaders in the field to present on the current and future applications of the technology as well as share strategies, best practices and protocols on the usage of the tool. Attend the pre-conference workshop, Bioinformatics & Data Management Strategies Workshop, on June 19th, 2013. The workshop is a half-day seminar dedicated to helping users in discussing the issues involved in a sequencing laboratory and developing solutions to these problems. Bioinformatics experts will present on methods and best practices for data management, analysis and interpretation in a variety of sequencing applications. Additional topics include optimization of work flow, software utilization and cloud computing.
