演講摘要
As a blithe offspring, Chemical Physics has evolved its own personality, often melding those of its parents in novel ways. My talk presents three vignettes that illustrate characteristic qualities of this hybrid, widely ranging field. (1) The “Mount Everest of Organic Synthesis.” How knowledge of a simple geometric feature of a molecule with only 9 atoms enabled stereospecific synthesis of just one form of a molecule with over 400 atoms thqat has over 1021 distinct structures. (2) “Sex and the Single Methyl Group.” How it was found that the lack of a methyl group (CH3) at a particular location (probability ~10-5) switches the sex of a human fetus with XY chromosomes from male to (infertile) female. (3) “A Tale of Two Lines.” How remarkably simple projective transformations of rudimentary models (Lattice Gas, Ising model, van der Waals equation) account for long-recognized but puzzling correlations observed between supercritical and subcritical properties of temperature-density phase diagrams for many substances.
