Welcome to ICOS-17!

On behalf of the organizing committee, we extend a wholehearted welcome to all potential participants in ICOS-17, the 17th International Conference on Organic Synthesis, which will be held in Daejeon, Korea from June 22 (Sun) to 27 (Fri) in 2008. Members of the organizing committee are fully aware that ICOS meetings are the most important global events for the science of organic synthesis, and will endeavor to maintain a leading role in bringing renowned researchers and numerous contributors from all over the world together again.

We as synthetic chemists design new reagents, invent novel reactions, and devise unique reaction sequences for the synthesis of complex molecules. Organic synthesis remains one of the most exciting yet demanding research areas as it continues to challenge us to be vastly creative in science. In recent years, synthetic chemists have actively pursued scientifically intriguing and industrially applicable excursions into materials science and biosciences. In materials research, design and synthesis of new materials require the skills of synthetic chemists. Advances in life sciences are coupled with the synthesis of essential molecules possessing designed physiological functions that require many layers of understanding to prepare. Synthetic chemists will continue to play vital roles in materials science, molecular biology, medicine, and related fields. ICOS-17 will provide an important forum for exchanges of ideas and presentations of novel findings at the forefront of traditional synthetic organic chemistry and excitingly developing areas alike.

Through your participation in ICOS-17, you can become steeped in the principles and the applications of modern organic synthesis during your stay as well as enjoy downtime with colleagues in the quaintness of the most distinct East-Asian culture: the Korean traditional culture with its spicy cuisine and historical treasures from centuries ago. The city of Daejeon, home of the signature Science Town of Korea, is ideal for enriching your scientific and cultural experience. It is centrally located in South Korea: within one hour’s drive from the capital of the ancient Baekje Dynasty (BC 18 - AD 660) and three hours from the amazing former capital of the Shilla Dynasty (BC 57 - AD 935).
